Please Seat Yourself: Inclusive Restroom Design
This presentation will take a deep dive on the religious, psychological and social factors influencing restroom and bathroom design, including the unintended consequences –both good and bad –of non-gender specific facilities. We will discuss code compliance impacting design. Finally, we will review case studies of multi-user, non-gender-specific facilities at three higher education institutions.

Designing for the Deaf: A Case Study at RIT LBJ Hall
Designing for the Deaf, or “DeafSpace”, aims to create buildings and spaces that enhance the experience and lend to the culture of the deaf and hard-of-hearing. This presentation will explore the main concepts of designing these inclusive and friendly environments, while learning how these principles were applied to projects at the Rochester Institute of Technology’s Lyndon B. Johnson Hall.

2022 Thomas Wurzer Memorial Scholarship
$2,500 scholarship to a deserving student in an Architectural, Engineering or Construction Technology Program, based on merit and by interest to aspire to a career in the design or construction profession. Submissions due by January 6, 2023.

The New Library: Designing with Community in Mind
Library design is perhaps in its most exciting and demanding period. To remain relevant and to effectively serve their communities, libraries need to offer more than just a place to store and lend books. Today’s library now serves as a marketplace of ideas, with varied methods to engage their patrons. Library design teams are challenged to create spaces that serve multiple purposes and have the flexibility to grow and change.

Adaptive Re-Use of the Historic Hickey Freeman Clothing Manufacturing Building
The iconic Hickey Freeman clothing manufacturing company was established in Rochester, NY in 1899. It found its permanent location at the current site on N. Clinton Ave in 1912. In order to preserve the historic building and keep the company located in the City, it would be necessary to consolidate and re-organize their manufacturing operations into a smaller footprint within the existing 200,000 SF building and to re-purpose the remaining space.
